Green Iowa AmeriCorps is a recent addition to Des Moines area AmeriCorps service programs and the group of five members will be part of COSC’s team through July. The service members are here to lead a community outreach effort to improve energy efficiency in homes. Green Iowa AmeriCorps’ multifaceted approach includes conducting a variety of educational workshops and developing resources with COSC, creating programs with local schools, and coordinating a friendly neighborhood association competition between Beaverdale, Gray’s Lake and Lower Beaver through MidAmerican Energy’s new Save Some Green Neighborhood Initiative.

The Green Iowa AmeriCorps members are producing humorous and informative video skits to promote each Grow Your Green workshop. The episodes are available at http://www.youtube.com/IowaCOSC.

Many of us don’t realize that a common ¼ inch crack around a door or window can be the equivalent of a gaping hole in the wall. Building experts agree that energy efficiency measures offer the greatest return on investment homeowners could ever find. Green Iowa AmeriCorps member Aaron Hammond will lead the Grow Your Green: Keeping Cozy workshop, providing homeowners with empowering hands-on knowledge of weatherization techniques that are easy, effective and even fun.
